Sixteen-year-old Angela finds herself running through a dark forest at night, being chased by someone or something that terrifies her.  There's a bump on her head and she's wearing a white dress but no shoes.  Before she has time to figure out what happened to her or where she is, she's forced to run away from the hidden person or thing that's following her.

At length she arrives at an area where some holes have been dug into the forest ground; she inadvertently falls into one of them and ends up inside an underground cave, where she can hear a soft moaning sound and the tinkling of chimes.  Scrambling out of the cave, she pauses to look at all of the holes around it, wondering why there would be such holes in the middle of this forest.  Then she hears a noise nearby, and she lapses into panic, wishing only that she could be back in the old farmhouse where her mother, brother and sister are staying for the summer.  Instead, she hears strange laughter and suddenly finds that she's not alone.  Luci, an odd girl in a dark dress, suddenly appears next to Angela, giving her a start.

Angela is bewildered, especially after Luci disappears as suddenly as she came.  The sounds of Angela's other pursuer (or pursuers?) recur, and Angela is forced back into the terrifying reality of the moment.  When Luci reappears, Angela's pleading look appeals to her for help.  Luci leads Angela away, and the two of them run off to a safer part of the forest.

They become friends, and they find an unoccupied cabin in the woods.  In time, Angela is stunned when she comes to realize that Luci is a disembodied spirit, roaming the unseen world of the spirits on earth, seeking to fulfill her purpose, whatever it may be.  Even more shocking is when Angela discovers that she too is a spirit, the victim of a traffic accident the previous night, destined to walk among the other ghostly figures of the spirit world until she, like Luci, can solve the riddle as to why she is here and what she must do to move on . . .
